Fat Tire Classic at Mt. San Antonio College

As luck would have it, Sunday morning, October 29 was another perfect day for MTB racing, with the temperature around 70 degrees and overcast.  I’ve never ridden in the Mt. San Antonio College (SAC) area, so didn’t know what to expect except some past race videos available on youtube.

The 3.1 mile course had less climbing and faster fire roads than the prior two Triple Crown races.  Parts of the course offered some off camber single track that proved to be tricky for a few riders.

Odinn Thordarson finished a strong 4th in the Junior Men’s group (and he is on the young side of this under 18 group).  I’ve had the pleasure of racing with this young man in all 3 of the race series and he’s steadily improved his fitness and skills with each race.  Watch out when Odinn hits his teens!  Thomas Cassidy ventured out for this race, and took the podium in his Sport Clydesdale category.  Rob Richman went down during this race in a bit of an odd spot unfortunately.  He is doing ok, but decided to sit out the rest of the race (good judgement should always win out).  Nick Humby finished 2nd in his age group in a tough Expert  category, his series nemesis finishing 1st.  Additional kudos to Nick for taking the series runner up medal as well.  I finished 2nd in the Beginner category in my age group, and finishing the series as runner up with 3rd, 2nd, and 2nd in the 3 races.  On to the Sport category next year.

I have enjoyed my initial journey into MTB racing.  And without a doubt, the opportunity to race with the PAA MTB team members…Nick, Rob. Bradley and Odinn among others, made it all the more fun.  Without their support, camaraderie, hints and tricks, the experience would have been very different.
