Dirt Racing April Recap

We had at least five PAA members start LA Tourist Race #3. This 100-mile race, with 12,218 ft of elevation, was very scenic and we visited some of the gravel roads deep in the Angeles National Forest. Kent Hammond smashed it once again and continued his undefeated streak in the LA Tourist races.

This was the third of three races that Let's Ride Cyclery puts on every year. There is no set course for each race as your objective is to collect pages from books stashed a week prior to the race. This race saw points near Granite Mountain, Rosenita Saddle, Vetter Mountain, Valley Forge camp, and Mt Lowe Road.

The weather looked pretty grim, but we were determined to give it our best shot. The sun was out for most of the climb to Mill Creek summit, but clouds rolled in and the wind picked up as we climbed to our first point near Granite Mountain. We picked up our pace and ticked off the first three points with only a light sprinkling, but as we left Vetter Mountain the rain got going. Andrew kept me going through the last two points and I made sure to cheer for Valerio each time we crossed paths (he was always close behind). Even with the heavy rain the Lowelife trail crew was still out making tacos for the finishers when we rolled in soaking wet.

This was certainly one of my favorite rides I've done recently, and I would suggest it for anyone who is looking for a great adventure in the Angeles National Forest. https://www.strava.com/routes/3219844831872124982

Another highlight for April is that Evy Gin and Mike Macatula completed the Sea Otter Fuego XL mountain bike race. This race is around 70 miles and 9,000 feet of climbing. This is a massive amount of miles and climbing to do on mountain bike terrain. Huge congratulations to both of them for taking this on and finishing strong!
