About this event

WE-ride, Sunday, June 9 - Santa Monica Mountains (from Agoura Hills)

As summer approaches, it’s enjoyable to start riding closer to the coast. This Sunday, take on some classic climbs and descents in the Santa Monica Mountains, starting from Reyes Adobe park in Agoura Hills. Our route offers two options: either climbing to the mountains’ crest, descending on the western end of Mulholland Drive, then riding a few miles east along the coast to return via Latigo Canyon, a classic and rigorous climb. A shorter option takes the same route to the coast, then returns via Encinal Canyon, equally striking but shorter by a few miles and a few hundred feet of climbing.

Either way, be sure to fill your water bottles at Leo Carillo campground, just before we reach the coast, so you have water for the long climb back!

Both routes offer the option of stopping for lunch in Cornell at Old Place, at the bottom of the classic Mulholland Highway “Rock Store” descent (which is closed to automobiles but open again for cyclists).

Start Time: 8:00 AM on Sunday, June 9, at Reyes Adobe Park in Agoura Hills (https://maps.app.goo.gl/QDFeYate1jBZPDo6Awhich offers parking and restrooms.

Routes for Download:

Long route (Latigo Canyon): https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46981962

51 miles, ~5200 feet climbing

Short route (Encinal Canyon): https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46981912

41.5 miles, ~4400 feet climbing

Weather Forecast: Sunday is forecast to have some June Gloom, sparing us from the inland heat wave with the marine layer keeping temperatures moderate — perfect for cyclists. When we roll, the temperature in Agoura Hills will be in the low 60s, reaching the upper 70s in the afternoon. The coast is predicted to reach the low 70s in the afternoon.

• Download the route prior to arrival.

• Be self-sufficient, prepared to handle flats and minor bike repairs.

• Carry a cell phone in case of emergency or to get that Uber ride needed every once in a while. (Be aware, however, that cell phone reception on many WE-ride routes in the San Gabriel Mountains is very limited).
